The volcano rabbit is the world's
smallest rabbit. It dwells only in a small area of Mexico. The
volcano rabbit is the smallest of all rabbits. The volcano rabbit only
lives on four volcanoes. It has short ears and a tiny tail. The
rabbits live in pine forests on the sides of the volcanoes at heights
of 2,800 to 4,250 metres. Their habitat of dense
clumps of grass is called "zacaton".

Not much is known about the habits
of volcano rabbit. What is known comes from watching them in zoos. The
rabbits live in small groups and are aggressive towards each other. The
clumps of zacaton grasses provide places where rabbits can hide from
their aggressive neighbours. They are mainly active by day and they are
very noisy. The females give birth to two babies between December and
July. Volcano rabbits have never been known to live anywhere but on the
four volcanoes.
