Giant Panda
The Giant Panda
lives high in
the mountains of China. The giant panda has an extra long wrist
bone. This special bone is very useful when feeding on bamboo. If
it senses danger , it would climb a tree or swim away.

A baby panda
weighed about the same as a tomato when it was just
born. All cubs are tiny when
they're born. Their eyes open after six weeks and
they start to explore. They love tumbling on hills. Giant pandas
give
birth to one or two cubs in a cave or tree hollow. If twins are born
the mother only rears one, leaving the other to die.
The giant panda first appeared around 10 million years ago. Fossils of
giant pandas have been found throughout China. Scientists have argued
for many many years about whether or not the giant panda is a bear. It
certainly looks like a bear, but it does not behave like one. It does
not hibernate, although it lives in places with very cold winters. It
rarely roars like a bear but tends to bleat. Others indicate that the
panda's nearest relatives are bears and that the giant panda is indeed
a bear.
